He is the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Its numerical value is five, its grammatical functions are fundamental to Hebrew, and it occupies a remarkable place within the four-letter sacred name יהוה.

HE IN THE
ANCIENT ALPHABET
He belongs to the ancient Northwest Semitic alphabetic tradition from which the Hebrew alphabet ultimately developed.
Its written form changed substantially across ancient Semitic, Phoenician, early Hebrew, Aramaic-derived, and later Jewish scripts. The modern square form ה represents the result of that long development.
Proposed pictorial explanations of the earliest alphabetic ancestor of He should be treated cautiously. Later mystical symbolism cannot simply be projected backward onto the earliest sign.
THE SOUND
OF HE
Historically, He represents a consonantal h-type sound.
In Hebrew, however, the behavior of He depends partly upon its position and grammatical environment. At the end of words it may participate in the representation of a final vowel rather than functioning simply as an independently pronounced consonant.

DEFINITE ARTICLE
One of the most important grammatical functions associated with He is the Hebrew definite article.

The exact vocalization and accompanying consonantal changes depend upon the word that follows.

THE QUESTION
Biblical Hebrew can also employ prefixed He as an interrogative particle—a grammatical marker introducing a question.
This illustrates an important principle: the same written Hebrew letter can perform different functions depending upon its context.
MOVEMENT
TOWARD A PLACE
Hebrew can attach He to the end of certain nouns to express movement toward a destination. Grammarians commonly call this the directional or locative He.
The added final He can contribute the sense “toward” or “to” the place indicated by the noun.

In standard Hebrew numerical notation, He has the value 5.
Because He occupies the fifth position in the alphabet, its ordinal value is also 5.

He appears twice within the four-letter sacred name יהוה.
ה = 5

The numerical total 26 follows directly from standard gematria. The theological or mystical significance assigned to that number belongs to subsequent interpretation.
TWO OCCURRENCES
OF HE
Because He occurs twice in יהוה, the two He letters contribute a combined standard numerical value of 10.
This is a direct numerical observation. Any further symbolic meaning attached to the repetition or the total must be identified separately as interpretation.
ABRAM &
ABRAHAM
Genesis 17 records the transformation of the name Abram into Abraham.
In the Hebrew spelling, the new name contains an additional He:
אברהם = ABRAHAM
Genesis 17:5 itself explains the new name in connection with Abraham becoming the father of a multitude of nations. Later interpreters also explored the significance of the added letter He.
SARAI &
SARAH
The same chapter records the renaming of Sarai as Sarah.
The Hebrew transformation is not simply the addition of He: the final Yod of שרי is replaced as the name becomes שרה.
Later Jewish interpretation develops additional teachings from these letters, but the textual change itself should be described precisely.
THE NUMBER
FIVE
Five is the objective standard numerical value of He. Jewish interpreters have subsequently developed symbolic associations involving that number.
Such associations can draw upon scriptural patterns, groups of five, the five books of the Torah, or particular mystical systems.
Numerical value and symbolic significance are different claims. The first can be calculated; the second must be argued from context and sources.
THE WORLD
& THE LETTER HE
Rabbinic interpretation connects the letters He and Yod with the creation of worlds through a reading of Isaiah 26:4.
Babylonian Talmud Menachot 29b develops the verse homiletically, associating this world with He and the world to come with Yod.
This is rabbinic interpretation of the scriptural wording, not a historical explanation of the alphabetic origin of He.
FORM &
INTERPRETATION
Rabbinic and later mystical interpreters have contemplated the openings and strokes of the square Hebrew form of He.
In Menachot 29b, the form of He participates in a teaching about this world, human failure, repentance, and the possibility of return.
This interpretation concerns the received Jewish letter form and its rabbinic reading. It should not be projected backward as the original reason the ancient alphabetic sign was created.
HE WITHIN
THE LETTER SYSTEM
Sefer Yetzirah treats the twenty-two Hebrew letters as active elements within an ordered cosmological system.
In widely transmitted versions of the work, He belongs among the twelve “simple” letters.
The detailed cosmological correspondences assigned to individual letters vary among textual recensions and later commentaries. Specific associations should therefore be identified by source.
HE WITHIN
THE FOUR LETTERS
Later Kabbalistic systems devote extensive attention to the four letters of יהוה and to the relationships represented by each position within the name.
Because He occurs in both the second and fourth positions, later mystical texts and commentaries can distinguish the two occurrences rather than treating them as symbolically identical.
Those correspondences belong to specific Kabbalistic systems and should be presented with their textual sources rather than as the original linguistic meaning of the letter He.
LETTERS WITHIN
DIVINE SYMBOLISM
Zoharic literature frequently interprets Hebrew letters within larger symbolic structures involving Scripture, creation, sacred names, and the sefirotic world.
He therefore acquires meaning according to the passage and symbolic structure in which it appears. There is no need to reduce its entire Zoharic significance to a single definition.
