WHEN WISDOM REFUSES TO WHISPER

Proverbs does not introduce Wisdom—חָכְמָה (Chokmah)—as an idea hidden from ordinary people. She is pictured in public, raising her voice where human decisions are actually made. The image is striking: wisdom is available, audible, and demanding attention.

That changes the question. The problem is not always that wisdom is absent. Sometimes the problem is that another voice is preferred. Proverbs 1–9 repeatedly places competing paths before the reader: instruction and refusal, discernment and seduction, life and destruction.

The text therefore asks for more than admiration of wisdom. It asks for a response. Before interpretation becomes elaborate, the literary picture is already clear: Chokmah speaks, humanity hears, and a choice follows.
