TET

Tet is the ninth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Its numerical value is nine, and its interpretive history is especially influenced by its appearance in the Hebrew word טוב — “good.”

LETTER

Tet follows Chet and precedes Yod in the traditional sequence of the twenty-two Hebrew letters.

TET IN THE
ANCIENT ALPHABET

Tet belongs to the ancient Northwest Semitic alphabetic tradition and has cognate forms in related Semitic writing systems.

The modern square Hebrew form ט developed through a long scribal history and should not be treated as identical in appearance to the earliest alphabetic sign.

Popular claims that the ancient sign carried one fixed pictorial meaning should be treated cautiously unless tied to specific historical evidence.

THE SOUND
OF TET

In standard Modern Israeli Hebrew, Tet is pronounced as a t sound.

Historically, Tet represented a consonant distinct from Tav. That older distinction is still reflected in the fact that ט and ת remain separate Hebrew letters.

Tet and Tav may sound alike in much Modern Israeli Hebrew, but they are historically and alphabetically distinct.

In standard Hebrew numerical notation, Tet has the value nine.

Because Tet occupies the ninth position in the alphabetic sequence, its ordinal value is also nine.

TOV —
GOOD

One of the most important Hebrew words beginning with Tet is טוב — tov, commonly translated “good.”

טוב can describe what is good, pleasing, beneficial, suitable, or favorable depending upon context.

Because טוב begins with Tet, later interpreters frequently connect the letter with goodness. That association grows from real Hebrew vocabulary, but it is not the same as saying that the letter ט by itself lexically means “good.”

Under standard gematria, טוב has the numerical value seventeen.

The numerical total is calculation. Any additional significance assigned to seventeen belongs to interpretation.

“THAT IT
WAS GOOD”

טוב is one of the recurring evaluative words of the Genesis creation account.

The repeated statement that אלהים sees what has been made as טוב gives the word a prominent role in the literary structure of Genesis 1.

This textual prominence helps explain why later Jewish interpretation could connect Tet, the initial letter of טוב, with the concept of goodness.

TET ENTERS
THE TORAH

The first occurrence of Tet in the Torah appears in the word טוב in Genesis 1:4.

In the narrative, אלהים sees the light and declares it good.

Later interpreters noticed this first appearance and treated it as symbolically significant. The textual fact and the later interpretation should remain clearly distinguished.

NINE

Tet’s direct numerical identity is simple: it is the ninth letter and carries the value nine.

Later traditions attach a variety of symbolic meanings to nine, but none should be confused with the basic numerical fact itself.

GOODNESS
WITHIN

Because the first Tet in the Torah appears in טוב, later Jewish interpretation frequently associates the letter with goodness.

Some later mystical readings develop this further, portraying Tet as goodness that is concealed, enclosed, or awaiting revelation.

“Hidden goodness” is a later symbolic reading, not an ancient lexical definition of the letter. Its interpretive force depends on the tradition and textual source in which it appears.

GOODNESS

Rabbinic interpretation noticed the striking relationship between Tet and טוב — “good.” The association is rooted in an observable feature of the Torah’s Hebrew text.

Tet first appears in the Torah within טוב in Genesis 1:4, where the light is declared good. Later teachers could therefore treat Tet as suggestive of goodness.

The textual observation is verifiable. The conclusion that Tet itself symbolizes goodness belongs to interpretation.

LIGHT
& GOOD

Tet’s first Torah appearance occurs at the moment when the newly created light is evaluated as טוב.

This textual proximity between light and goodness later provided fertile material for homiletic and mystical interpretation.

THE HIDDEN
GOOD

Later mystical interpretation sometimes develops Tet’s association with טוב into the idea of goodness that exists before it is fully revealed.

The inward-curving appearance of the later square letter can then become part of a symbolic reading: goodness enclosed, concealed, or held within.

This interpretation depends partly upon the later visual form of ט and should not be projected backward as the established meaning of the earliest alphabetic sign.

THE NUMBER NINE

Tet’s numerical identity is exact: ט has the standard value nine.

Later numerical systems can develop extensive interpretations of nine. Those meanings belong to particular methods and traditions rather than to the lexical definition of Tet.

TET WITHIN
THE LETTER SYSTEM

Sefer Yetzirah places Tet among the twelve letters commonly described as the “simple” letters.

Within this system, letters participate in correspondences connecting language with dimensions of the cosmos, time, and human existence.

Surviving recensions and later commentaries do not always assign identical correspondences. Specific claims about Tet should therefore identify the textual tradition being followed.

GOODNESS
& MYSTERY

Zoharic literature provides a world in which Hebrew letters can participate in interpretation of creation, Torah, sacred names, light, judgment, blessing, and concealed realities.

Tet’s relationship with טוב makes goodness an especially important interpretive field, while the Genesis connection between טוב and light supplies additional material for mystical reflection.

These meanings must be established from actual Zoharic passages. No single modern definition should be substituted for the complexity of the source tradition.

LETTERS, NUMBERS
& THE SACRED NAME

Hebrew letter study eventually intersects with the most concentrated sacred letter sequence in the biblical text: יהוה.

The arithmetic is straightforward. The theological and mystical interpretations surrounding the Name belong to additional layers of textual history and interpretation.

The Compendium preserves the Hebrew letters themselves while distinguishing what can be calculated directly from what later traditions understand those calculations to signify.
